OUR LIST FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS
1st movie “Little Women”
Louisa May Alcott’s book “Little Women” is a true classic in the Anglo-American world and has been made into a movie countless times. Last year, actress and director Greta Gerwig dared to tackle this material again and created one of the most beautiful winter films in recent memory. It is about the five March sisters who live with their loving mother in the country while the civil war is raging.
They fall in and out of love and each of the sisters somehow tries to find their place in the world. On the one hand, the movie offers many feminist points of reference, as Gerwig interprets the story in a more modern way than the older versions; on the other hand, it is a fantastic movie about family and sisterhood. The Little Women talk to each other and scurry around each other, and even if you may not have grown up with so many siblings yourself, the movie conveys a very pleasant feeling of cohesion and family without sinking completely into kitsch. A masterpiece and a great recommendation for the colder days, which is like balm for the soul.
2nd series “Pride and Prejudice”
Anyone with a taste for cozy historical fiction will sooner or later stumble across the film adaptations of Jane Austen’s literature. Younger generations in particular will be familiar with “Pride and Prejudice” with Keira Knightley.
The series from the 1990s that catapulted Colin Firth to fame is also worthwhile. Like Little Women, it is also about five sisters, this time from 19th-century England. All of them are unmarried and looking for a partner for life. When the mysterious Mr. Darcy finally moves into the neighborhood, a love-hate relationship develops with the second eldest sister Elisabeth.
The series should be praised for sticking to Austen’s original and thus being able to draw all the characters much more. What is great, however, is that you can sink into this kitschy world for much longer than in the later feature film. It is particularly suitable for forgetting the real world outside for a long moment with a pot of tea and plenty of cookies.
3rd movie “Hamilton”
The biggest musical sensation in recent US history has been showing on Disney+ since this year. In “Hamilton”, an ensemble of PoC (People of Color) actors tell the story of US founding father Alexander Hamilton and the piece is a stunner.
The mixture of hip-hop, RnB, and historical information whirls across the screen like a dervish for almost three hours, the set design is minimalist, the choreography is breathtaking and the music is so catchy that you can sing along by the second chorus. The musical has been criticized for casting Hamilton, who owned slaves himself, in too rosy a light, even glorifying him. This is indeed debatable, but there is no question that Hamilton is a wonderful spectacle that is particularly suitable for dark days.
